Does a bitcoin-backed loan affect your credit score?

SALT, Strike and Ledn on credit checks, bureau reporting and what liquidation does to your credit, from each lender's own page, read 16 October 2026.

By Staff, Lend Ledger

At the three lenders read here, applying for a bitcoin-backed loan generally does not touch your credit score: SALT and Ledn say no traditional credit check is run, and Strike says one is typically not required. SALT and Strike add that the loans are typically not reported to credit bureaus, so on-time payments generally do not build credit.

Each answer is pinned to the lender’s own page, read by this desk on 16 October 2026.

Does a bitcoin-backed loan affect your credit score at each lender?

Lender, page readCredit pull at applicationReported to Equifax, Experian, TransUnion?Credit if it goes wrong
SALT, credit-score articleNo credit check at any point; no hard or soft inquiryGenerally no; “most crypto-backed loans” unreported is SALT’s generalisationMargin call, then liquidation; “does not ordinarily” damage a credit report
Strike, debt-consolidation page“Typically” not required“Typically not reported”Not stated; margin call and liquidation risk listed
Ledn, loans page and guideNo traditional credit check; identity and location checks applyNot stated on the pages readNot stated on the pages read

SALT’s article names the trade-off: the loan generally stays out of a mortgage lender’s debt-to-income math, though underwriters may ask about large deposits, but builds no payment history. Strike’s page hedges with “typically”.

What happens to your credit if a bitcoin loan is liquidated?

SALT says a failed loan resolves through the collateral, not collections. No page read covers a shortfall, where liquidation leaves a balance unpaid; treat that as unknown until your agreement says. The sale is explained in our liquidation guide, the time before it in our margin-call piece.

Credit questions borrowers ask

Do crypto loans require a credit check?

Not at the three lenders read here. SALT says there is no credit check at any point in the application, Ledn says no traditional credit check is required, and Strike says one is typically not required. SALT and Ledn still verify identity, and Ledn also checks location eligibility.

Does crypto lending affect your credit score?

Not directly, at the lenders read. With no credit pull there is no inquiry, and SALT and Strike say their loans are typically not reported to the bureaus. SALT adds that reporting practices can vary by lender and can change, so confirm it before signing.

Can a bitcoin-backed loan build credit?

On SALT’s wording, no: positive payment history is not reported, so on-time payments typically will not build or repair credit. Strike’s indirect case is that using the proceeds to pay down reported debt may improve a score; that is old debt shrinking, not the new loan counting.

This desk did not check any lender’s licensing or regulatory status, so none is implied, and SALT says reporting can vary by lender, so read the loan agreement. Borrowing against bitcoin can cost the whole collateral through liquidation or counterparty failure, and nothing here is financial advice.
